Our Story

BD Multimedia : a Fintech at the Heart of the Digital Revolution

BD Multimedia is a French Fintech company specializing in electronic payment services. Driven by a strong digital culture, we focus on creating value-added services through the use of information technologies. Since the mid-1980s, BD Multimedia has contributed to the development of telematics and Telecom services in France, always adapting to technological advancements.

This digital culture has been central to our business since the beginning, leading us naturally to transform into a Fintech specializing in value-added electronic payment services. In 2015, we obtained a Payment Institution license from the French regulator, ACPR, allowing us to provide regulated services in France and Europe under the European Payment Services Directive (PSD).

Listed on the stock exchange since 1997, BD Multimedia is primarily owned by its founders and has a team of 30 employees.

Today, we operate in two main markets: digital payment services and neobanking

Our markets

Neobanking*

Our target market includes individuals excluded from or dissatisfied with traditional banks, a growing segment due to rising bank fees and increased digitization of services. Customers are increasingly drawn to online solutions, with a usage rate of 82% as early as 2015.

The Macron Law and PSD2 encourage this shift, facilitating banking mobility and enabling new financial players to access customer accounts

Payment Institution

Our primary focus is on e-merchants, especially in France, where e-commerce is experiencing rapid growth. In 2017, the French e-commerce market was estimated at €80 billion, with a rise in transactions per user from 7 to 28 per year between 2014 and 2016. The number of online merchants also increased, reaching 204,000 in 2016.

Finally, marketplaces, which account for 28% of online sales, play a key role in driving e-commerce growth.

Our Approach

BD Multimedia is a payment institution operating under the Payment Services Directive, managing its own payment platform to deliver a comprehensive, coordinated integration of payment methods. This platform allows merchants to accept 140 currencies, alternative payment methods like carrier billing, one-click payments, and recurring payments.

In a landscape populated by new entrants offering standardized payment APIs, BD Multimedia and its Payment.net solution enable both a standardized approach (online API) similar to competitors and customized solutions tailored to clients’ needs (regulatory analysis, custom APIs).

This strategy is straightforward for us to implement, as we fully control our technologies and development timelines. We identify as a Fintech because we are fundamentally a technology company, creating innovative products in the financial sector to support our clients’ growth.

Focusing on two main product pillars, BD Multimedia positions itself as an innovative, forward-looking payment institution shaping the financial products of tomorrow.

The term “neobank” is commonly used, particularly in the press, to describe new players in the financial sector. However, it should not be forgotten that this neologism is based on a word that has a legal definition. The ACPR itself used the term “neobank” in the common sense in its study N°96 “ETUDE SUR LES MODELES D’AFFAIRES DES BANQUES ENIGNE ET DES NEOBANQUES” or on the study published at https://acpr.banque-france.fr/des-neobanques-en-quete-de-rentabilite, noting: “The terms ‘bank’ and ‘banking’ must here be understood in their common and not legal sense, insofar as some of the players surveyed are not credit institutions but payment institutions (Compte Nickel) or electronic money institutions (Revolut)”. A reminder of the use of this neologism was issued in its press release of April 04, 2021 “Reminder of the rules governing the use of the term ‘neobank’. Please note that ToneoFirst does not use the term “neobank” to market its product to its customers.
